Pursuing your Passion instead of a Job

Passionately in Pursuit

Passion and how it unravels in our lives is usually a mystery. Even more so, how we solve the mystery, is even more difficult. As a college freshman, I knew I had a passion for psychology but quickly realized that research wasn’t for me.

And as my journey continued, I had to figure out… how can I continue to pursue that passion for understanding people in my career?

Well, you probably know now that I became a certified HR professional and most recently a Talent Acquisition expert. But that idea wasn’t always clear to me.

I had to create experiences for myself to fully explore what my passion would look like in my career.

After an industrial-organizational psychology lab, a master’s degree, several HR classes, and one internship later… I finally decided that human resources was my passion.

Along the way, I asked myself a few questions that I think any professional who is considering what their true professional passion is should ask themselves.

Clarity starts with asking yourself the real questions like:

  1. What are you passionate about?
  2. What excites you? Or Brings you joy?
  3. What are you truly talented at?
  4. What could you do every day and be happy?
  5. What is a hobby that you can make a career out of?
  6. What inspires you every day?
  7. What job do you wish that you could have, but are pretty sure you’d love?
  8. What is your role model’s job?
  9. What did you say you wanted to do right after college?
  10. If you could have any job right now. What would it be?
  11. What do you keep saying you need to do, but don’t?
  12. What do other’s say you’d be amazing at?
  13. What in your current job is your favorite thing to do?
  14. What do you believe would make you feel fulfilled in life?
  15. What would you like your legacy to be?
  16. Forgetting all else and removing all barriers, what do I really want to do?

The Three Circles

Once you’ve asked yourself these 16 questions… and once you’re sure that you are REALLY REALLY being honest with yourself and what you want.

I want you to think about this in terms of the three circles.

The three circles are designed to help you better understand, how you can pursue your professional passion. The three circles are:

  1. What are you (really) good at?
  2. What will others pay you to do (i.e. employer)?
  3. What are you passionate about?

 The Pursuit

And if you find something that is at the intersection of those “circles” then you’ve hit gold. That’s it. That is your dream job and career. Pursue THAT and don’t look back.

You don’t need permission; you don’t need a guarantee. You just need to drive to get to the finish line.

When I was in college, people told me that you’ll never get anywhere with a psychology degree and look at me now.

Don’t be afraid to pursue your passions, even when someone tells you that you can’t.
