MY STORY

Hello, I'm Mercedes

Career & Business Coach | HR Professional | DEI Consultant

My journey to Career Love began with a simple purpose: do my part to create a world where we all love what we do.

A bold vision perhaps, but here’s the thing about me: I’ve always pursued my passion unapologetically.

As I began my college career, I had one guiding passion: psychology. I loved learning about what motivated people to do great work. As it would happen, I found and joined a research lab focused on industrial-organizational psychology, and it set me on my path.

I went on to graduate with my B.S. in Psychology and M.S. in Management, all in strategic alignment to pursue a Ph.D. in I/O Psychology. But before that happened, I fell in love with Human Resources and never looked back.

On a mission to change the workplace, I secured my first HR internship where I truly loved showing up to work every day. It was there that I first began to advocate for employees, address inequities, and analyze the systemic challenges Black women and other marginalized groups faced in the workplace.

As is the experience of Black women, I began to understand the true inequities we face, and in hindsight, I was a martyr for my ideals and carried the weight of the toxic workplace I was fighting to change.

Nonetheless, I persisted: owning projects, leading initiatives, and serving as a trusted advisor, consultant, and educator to leaders.

While I believed I was fulfilling my purpose, there were days when I dreaded my commute, cried in my office, and stayed to clean up leadership’s mess well into the evening.

Over time, I understood that the workplace would never be a place where I could center my bliss, and I began to build my business as the ultimate exit plan.

But no one prepared me for this challenge, and realizing just how toxic and inequitable my work environment was, I put my business on the backburner, and pivoted to become an Executive Recruitment Consultant, and fell into career love all over again.

But after being promoted, everything shifted, and I experienced the full mental, emotional, and physical toll that the toxic job cycle can have on passion-driven, high-performing Black women.

While receiving accolades, building a high-performing team, and leading best-in-class diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, I was drowning under the pressure of a toxic supervisor. The stress caused anxiety, depression, and an adult ADHD diagnosis. In short, I kept the EAP busy all while exceeding expectations.

It was at this crossroads that I decided to finally break the cycle and create a new path to career and business love.

During this evolution, I created Black Woman Bliss, a bold vision for my life and a persona to redefine the career, business, and life that centered me.

Embodying Black Woman Bliss enabled me to make abundant decisions not from anxiety, stress, or lack, but from the mindset of the woman who knows that everything she desires is possible and already hers.

As this new identity emerged, so did a new, bold mission. I prepared for another career pivot with one idea in mind: My greatest work, my deepest passion, and my calling is career liberation.

With that calling in mind, I set out to bring my vision to life and my life into alignment. I pivoted to a leadership position that leveraged my HR and DEI expertise, launched the Black Woman Bliss Community to provide accessible career and business development, and launched the Career Liberation Project to cultivate liberatory workplaces across the globe.

As my identity and calling expanded, so did my success. In 2025, I finally made it to the ultimate exit: I quit my job and became a full-time coach, consultant, and educator, forging a path toward collective career liberation by centering the experiences of Black women.

The passion has never changed, but the calling continues to expand.
