Black Women and Our Path to Career Liberation
There was a time when I had a lot of hope for inclusive and equitable leadership.
I saw the change, the commitment, and the allyship.
It didn't erase the discrimination, but it felt like change was inevitable.
But like many Black women, I divested from educating people on the importance of DEI. It was too hard, and I was heartbroken.
It's around that time that I decided I was ready to leave the workplace.
You see, what HAD happened was, I went to a work retreat looking for a last sign of hope.
I dreamed that I would go to the retreat, and that the leaders there would say something... anything really that inspired me to keep fighting for workplace liberation.
But they never did and I left that retreat with my mind made up.
I was going to take a turn in the road.
One that I had to build, and pave, brick by brick... all by myself.
I was going to leave my 9-5 and build my business.
I decided that I was tired of carrying a dream that those with power could do the right thing, value people, and create a path to a reality where Black women could experience liberation at work.
And you might call me a fool, but I still think that dream is possible; but now I think it's just much further away than I originally hoped.
While we wait for this radical dream, I genuinely believe that each Black woman needs to be imagining her own path to liberation.
- What can we build to create our own source of stability?
- How can our communities, online and locally, provide cushion and support?
- What does it look like to push back against the de-normalization of DEI?
These questions are what my mission, the Career Love Mission, seeks to answer. It's my path to career liberation.
But what about you?
Are you ready to build something that creates freedom, opportunity, and options without relying on employers?
If you're ready, I created this video for you.
Black women have all of the brilliance and skill to build a profitable business, but we often get stuck in decision paralysis, self-imposed barriers, and overcomplication.
But I want you to know that the business you want to build can be created in 90 minutes. Check out my latest podcast episode to learn how you can do it.
